After many years of teaching experience I have learned that the learning process needs to be creative, applicable to the learner’s experience, and adaptable to the learner’s cognitive abilities. The following outline defines what I believe are the most important elements of the learning process: Safe environment- I work hard to create a safe learning environment. I believe students who feel safe in the environment will openly dialogue within the classroom. Learning styles- I understand how to identify and adapt a lesson to the learning styles of students. I know how to create lessons that incorporate various learning styles throughout the instructional period. Active Learning- I believe strongly in a collaborative learning environment. This is most effectively accomplished through a dynamic dialogue between students and the facilitator. Assessments- I believe assessments should be fair and valid measurements of the learning process. They should not only measure a student’s ability to learn the discipline, but also the instructor’s skills as a guide to learning. Emphasize Application – I believe useful knowledge is interdependent with other disciplines. As a skilled facilitator I am able to show how the subject being studied applies to other forms of knowledge. Critical thinking – I believe an important part of the learning process teaches learners to question assumptions, over generalizations, and seemingly unreasonable propositions. Collaborative learning – I believe collaborative learning teaches people to work effectively with teams. People who learn collaborative soft skills will be effective participants in the social process.
