Project Management and My Passion for Being Technical: I have over 17 years of IT experience ranging from Project manager (PM), technical architect, tech lead, developer, analyst, tester, teacher and trainer. I did my best to stay as technical as anyone. This came with a hefty price, where I had to challenge myself with architecting and developing projects outside my employment and jobs. My project management skills came with the territory from watching (bad, good or great) managers perform their jobs, management training course-document, being an entrepreneur with my own projects, owning and operating my own companies and creating automated management planners with templates. To me, Project Management is both an art and science. The art is God given talent such as looks, height, soft skills, passion, ability to lead and interpersonal skills. The science is structure/framework, planning and documentation. To me, PM must structure their thoughts, time, work, teams-talents, clients, effort, resources and misc. My personal site http://sameldin.com has documents about the structure and planning. I am open for any feedback, comments and corrections. Risk-taking as a technical manager differs from other PM. For example, we were taught in PM courses that if a team does not know how to swim, they should jump into the deep water with "How to Swim" manuals. They should learn how to swim on their way to the water and while in the water. I am not sure if I would take such a risk. Sadly, I am a perfectionist and workaholic who will not take such a risk, but I would be looking for outside help and equipment to take with me to the water before I do any jumping. The most important thing in any project is the client(s). Clients pay for my salary, put food on the table, gas in my car, etc. They keep me and my company employed. I cannot express how important the client is, even if the client is another department in the same company. To me, the ideal job is where I am both the technical architect and PM. I would be coding business tiers, commons, heavy sessions, tools or any parts of development. These components need years of experience and the knowledge of system plus the target products. Last but not least, I would like any feedback (good or bad) on my entrepreneurial Post Office Project posted on the web: http://crmdatafarm.com Thanks, Sam sam@sameldin.com Sam@CRMDataFarm.com (847) 606.9999
