Design Engineer
My name is Benjamin Rose. I am a graduate of Purdue with a BSME. While in my time at Purdue, I gained ample amounts of experience within the field of manufacturing and process engineering. I have held internships at Kentucky Trailer Manufacturing in Louisville, Kentucky (where I am now a Design Engineer), Westland Joaus Technologies, LLC in Peru, Indiana, and Butler America in West Lafayette, Indiana. During these internships I have been able to see many sides of the field of mechanical engineering. At Kentucky Trailer, where I have worked since 2011, and am currently a Design Engineer, I have designed numerous systems, parts, and test equipment for custom semi-trailers such as auto haulers and mobile command centers using SolidWorks, AutoCAD, and Autodesk Inventor. The main systems which I have designed include lift-gate systems for upper deck loading of vehicles, shelving systems, generator housings, and light box systems for automatic lights at the top of semi-trailers. I managed to decrease the cost of the light box systems per semi-trailer by nearly 80% while increasing the life and ease of use. Along with these systems, I have designed test equipment to take the systems I designed, and other components, to their limits in proof of their load rating. I designed a test fixture for the lift-gate which applied loads up to 15 tons. I designed a bumper test structure for applied forces upwards of 90 tons on the rear bumper of semi-trailers, and I have design shelve tests of applied loads upwards of 5 tons on shelving. I also designed test equipment for bonding strength of aluminum side panels, water proof tests for aluminum side panels, impact tests for shelving, and wear tests on shelving. I am a founder of Westland Joaus Technologies, LLC. At Westland Joaus, I have been in charge of various investor pitches at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the University of Southern California (USC). In 2012, we as a company were finalists in the MIT Clean Energy Prize Competition for our development of a high efficiency wind turbine transmission and traveled to MIT for investor pitches. Also, in 2013, we as a company were finalists at First Look West Energy competition at USC with our transmission and also traveled there for investor pitches. While in California, we joint ventured with Apollo 3 Energy and Apollo Manufacturing. As a joint venture we applied with the Department of Defense for SBIRs through Lockheed Martin. Also, as a joint venture, I have led a design team for the design of a new 180 degree flashlight as well as a line of LED tube lights over the last year. At Butler America, I worked as a contracted Production Planning Engineer for Sikorsky Helicopter on the Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) project. During my time at Butler, I aided in the moving of the Sikorsky S-92 Helicopter cabin from Japan to Troy Alabama. My tasks involved writing manufacturing plans and assembly plans for the S-92 cabin assembly. I worked this internship coincidently with the contracting work for Kentucky Trailer and the joint venture work for Westland Joaus. In my short career, I have held many positions in the engineering industry, gained 500-1000 hours of CAD (SolidWorks) experience, and have been able to get a better grasp on the future of engineering. I feel as though I would be a perfect fit in your companies engineering department and can really put what I have learned to excellent use by becoming a valuable member of your team. I am a person who is driven to excel at everything I do and I will not fall short of excellence. Regards, Benjamin Rose
