Retired NCIS Senior Special Agent with over 31 years professional law enforcement experience

I just retired from the U.S. Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) on 31May12, after 23 years federal service as a GS-1811 special agent. NCIS is a lean federal law enforcement agency with only 1200 sworn civilian special agents worldwide. Agents have to be independent, flexible, diverse in their expertise and able to work alone anywhere in the world as needed. My first 16 years I was an operational field agent, conducting felony criminal investigations involving crimes against persons, fraud and counterintelligence. This includes crime scene/death scene examinations, evidence collection, documenting facts, interviews and interrogations, dignitary protection, surveillance and counter surveillance and extensive travel in over 26 countries. I have recruited and trained criminal and intelligence sources, directed multiple drug interdiction investigations both in the United States and abroad. I have worked numerous felony investigations alone and with local and foreign law enforcement agencies, traveled extensively throughout the world for force protection and counterintelligence assignments, and I have extensive experience with dignitary protection assignments as a team member, driving and walking assignments, control room operation, advances, counter-surveillances and as the team leader for all. My last seven years with NCIS, I was an instructor, senior instructor, program manager and subject matter expert (SME) for the NCIS accredited training academy and a tactical police driving instructor with the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS’) Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC), Glynco, GA. I researched, wrote, developed and presented numerous accredited law enforcement training programs both locally and off site. I am a DHS and NCIS certified senior law enforcement instructor with extensive experience in federal law enforcement education, managing the NCIS academy, along with supervising, training and qualifying instructors. Prior to my NCIS career I was a police officer for over 8 years working in both overt and covert assignments and was a state certified police academy instructor.
