My Educational Philosophy Susan Newton MA, CAS As a facilitator of adult learning my goal is to support learners to develop the intellectual ability (metacognition) to use critical thinking skills to enhance conceptual and theoretical understanding. In the role of the facilitator, I believe that it is extremely important to establish a learner centered environment. To ensure that learner’s needs are being met; I feel establishing a safe, supportive, and collaborative environment is instrumental in the learner’s development of their critical thinking skills and willingness to take academic risks. As a facilitator my role is to guide learners by stimulating the ability to question, by questioning and validating individual perceptions. This will enhance learner’s intrinsic need for clarification and develop a deeper insight when examining assumptions. To ensure success, I will utilizes the strengths of the individual learning styles and previous knowledge represented within the group. I will utilize Andragogical Adult learning methods; the living lecture, class participation through group discussions, Classroom Assessment Techniques, and providing feedback, to promote learners engagement. This methodology will result in learners to take ownership for meeting their learning needs and goals. Assessment of knowledge acquisition (pending institutional requirements) will be determined by a collaboration between the adult learner and myself as facilitator, through discussion (group and/or individual) and/or development of a Learning Contract. By staying true to my educational philosophy, my hope is that I may have the privilege to accompany the adult learners on their journey of intellectual and moral growth.
