My career was with Pacific Bell for 33&1/2 yrs. In my experience I had several task assignments. Cable splicing, dispatch, material order, (non-stock paired exchange cable to underground sections, recover money and write jobs to restore damaged telephone equipment: (poles, cable, conduit and open wire), as well as prepare the route for submarine cable. My last seven years with Pac Bell was in a group called "Layout" with the purpose of designing trenches. The net result of distance between Manholes must an exact measurement between manholes for placement of sections of cable in the new conduit run. Bore pits would be placed for new manholes and one job had a 95' bore pit for the Manhole and a 3,000' bore @ the San Elijo Lagoon, S/O Solano Beach, San Diego. I retired from Pac Bell before work on this job started. Another administrative assignment was record purchase of easements in poles, company owned or owned by others, ie: San Diego Gas & Electric. (Record easement, and there were no attachment violations: (California State Law required minimum separation space requirements for those required to work on poles). In the material order I was trained to order underground cable by section from either San Leandro, CA or New Jersy where Western Electric had the Cable manufacturing facilities. Perhaps, when manufacturing caused limited availability of cable, cable had to be ordered from Europe or Japan. The job of recovering money from those who damage telephone equipment was interesting and challenging: I was working in the Division office and the area of the Division excluded the City Limits of Los Angeles, but was from the Ventura County line to the Mexican Border and East to Arizona, Nevada Borders. Every Monday morning I could expect area calls to replace 9 broken poles over the weekend. Also, write the data of who caused the accident and write the jobs to replace the damaged poles. Usually the Highway Patrol or Police departments had who caused the accident. I have also sold Real Estate in San Diego and Virginia Beach, VA. I also worked on inventory control for cable and special equipment. This assignment met all administrative requirements of the Construction-Engineering Dept. and the Accounting Dept. as well as the San Diego Gas & Electric Co. My work on pole line include verifying the communication attachments were correctly spaced and attached properly to the identified pole.
