- Designed centrifugal fans for power generation plants. Provided related technical support to vendors, customers, and to in-house Quality Control, Procurement, and fan assembly and testing facility. Oversaw preparation of drawings for rotor fabrication vendor and stationary steel (fan housing, inlet boxes, inlet vane controls (IVC‘s), bearing pedestals). Prepared procurement specifications to be sent to vendors for fan motor couplings, sleeve bearings, oil (forced) lubrication units, air inlet silencers, bearing vibration and temperature sensors, dampers, and actuators (hydraulic and pneumatic). Prepared contractually required submittals to customers containing specifications, procedures, data, and manuals for fans and components. Oversaw vendor-performed finite element analyses on fan rotor and worked closely with FEA vendor to make design modifications as needed to pass stress, fatigue, or modal vibration analyses. Created and maintained fan bill of material (BOM). Utilized design principles of rotating machinery.
1/2006 - 8/2006
Ryan Alternative Staffing
Contractor / Freelance
- Worked on-site in client’s engineering department (Union Metal Corporation—see). Trained new product engineers and checked their structural calculations. Wrote summaries of specifications and requirements of State DOT’s and selected counties and municipalities for quick reference by product engineers. Made recommendations on engineering and design policies and standards. Contributed to product engineering workload as permitted by the other duties.
4/2003 - 8/2005
Value Structures, Inc.
Individual Contributor
- Performed stress and deflection calculations on fabricated structures of steel and aluminum for traffic control and lighting to AASHTO requirements; determined related dead, ice, and wind loads. Interpreted state, county, and municipal specs, drawings, and plans to obtain related information. Oversaw preparation of proposal drawings for customer approval. Recommended alternative designs using standard parts and assemblies saving cost and/or throughput. Took opportunities to use simpler or fewer designs. Answered technical inquiries from state, county, and municipal personnel and their consultants, especially for approval of calculations or drawings. Provided PE-stamped calculations and drawings as needed. Demonstrated deflection and permanent set testing on trolley poles required for customer acceptance.

Provided PE-stamped calculations and drawings as needed. Served on process/procedures improvement team for shop drawing group to improve its turnaround time; contributed to and edited written procedures for successful ISO-9001 certification. Investigated problems with grading and testing A595 tubes, resulting in elimination of marginal process. Prepared weekly charts and statistics of related test data using Excel. Demonstrated deflection and permanent set testing on trolley poles required for customer acceptance. Documented tube advance procedure and successfully trained appropriate members for pilot team.
10/1991 - 9/1992
SKF Aeroengine North America
Individual Contributor
- Interpreted specs and purchase orders for aerospace and commercial bearings. Reviewed and changed drawings. Answered customer inquiries and negotiated differences. Selected bearing configurations, materials, heat treats, tolerances, finishes, and lubricants. Continued the packaging engineering effort started as a consultant (see Additional Technical Support, Inc.)
10/1990 - 9/1991
Additional Technical Support, Inc.
Contractor / Freelance
- Interpreted packaging and marking requirements and negotiated differences with customer. Designed packaging. Performed packaging troubleshooting. Wrote procedures, standards, and work instructions. Wrote and presented proposal for company-wide packaging/marking procedure including functional responsibilities and information flow, based on my study of plants, vendors, and a variety of customer requirements. Also recommended methods, materials, containers, and marking, including standardization schemes. Led to permanent position.

Meggitt Aircraft Braking Systems
Individual Contributor
- Evaluated requests from Manufacturing, Quality Assurance, and Procurement for design/spec changes (EPC's) for several hundred aircraft wheel & brake designs, both military and commercial. Performed engineering liaison with Manufacturing, Quality Assurance, Experimental Shop, Government and Customer Reps, Procurement, Vendors, and Shipping; and interpreted drawings and specs for same. Wrote material, process, and test specs. Initially participated in orientation program, working in 5 different engineering groups for 3 months each (Projects, Technical Services, Testing, Advanced Technology, & Field Support). Served on Material Review Board (MRB), Design Standards Committee, and Corrective Action Committee. Made design/spec changes to increase producibility, save cost, improve function, or resolve conflicts between design requirements and shop or vendor capabilities. Answered Quality Deficiency Reports (QDR's), Product Performance Reports (PPR's), and Corrective Actions Required (CAR's) to resolve quality, manufacturing, and customer issues. Did troubleshooting and operator training and extensively revised process spec when first computer-driven digital wheel balancer replaced older mechanical units. Worked out test setup and procedure for carbon composite oxidation study, did initial data-taking and analysis, initiated computer plotting of results, and trained co-op student to take it over. Organized arguments and data to qualify AAH Wheels and Brake by similarity. Conducted tests leading to selection of anaerobic threadlocking compound on F-16 cylinder sleeves, permitting non-mechanical retention.

Schlumberger Well Services
Individual Contributor
- Measured electrical, acoustical, and nuclear parameters and did testing and sampling in wells to determine formation types and properties. Operated, calibrated, and did troubleshooting on associated specialized equipment. Recommended services and producibility to customer for oil, gas, and water. Performed supporting formation properties computations as needed. Applied physics and geology toward well information analysis. Supervised up to 4 operators at a time. Made follow-up sales calls on customers.
