In a word, unexpected. In two words, completely unexpected. That's not to say that I don't have a plan -- I do. I've just never been right about it. I think of it as the "where do you see yourself in five years" curse. When I started at a newspaper as a copy editor in 1992, I had no idea that in the next five years I'd be promoted to a supervisory IT position. That pattern repeats itself, with a series of promotions in publishing and corporate communications jobs. Not bad for an English major -- especially for one who started off as a Mathematics major. (That pesky five-year thing started before my career.)
