CollapseDescription

I am a copywriter and editor with a diverse set of skills and experiences. Writing creatively about technical things excites me. Writing creatively about non-technical things excites me, too. I write B2B copy (including case studies and white papers), direct response, catalog copy, sales materials, and more. On the other hand, I also write and edit technical manuals and books, and create software documentation. One of my strengths is using storytelling in marketing.

Highlights:

I am currently a freelance writer who writes both technical copy and creative copy for a variety of medium- to large-size companies. In addition to the two anecdotes I gave above, one of the highlights of my freelance career has been to be involved with book projects by several design and usability faculty at the Ohio State University. I edited a book, Joint Cognitive Systems, by David Woods, which was published last year. I am currently working on a new book about product usability and design, whose main author is a non-native English speaker. I'm contributing material, but also polishing the book to make it appealing to "mainstream" native English speaking product designers. Prior to my freelance career, I was a technical writer and instructional designer for WorldCom. Our four-person team was responsible for training programs for our entire organization at that time. I was responsible for maintaining approximately 25 websites for my division. I initiated and managed our initial foray into web-based training, guiding the project, teaching participants how to use development tools, and delivering the finished product. This resulted in winning over our management team on potential that web-based training held for our company.

Companies I like:

Trader Joe's; Lush; a natural food company needing package copy; a catalog company needing catalog copy, online copy, or landing pages.

CollapseResponsibilities

Since I am a freelance copywriter, I'll relate some achievements that had great impact on my clients. I designed web-based training modules for a biomedical products company, aimed at new sales reps. These modules included anatomy, product knowledge, and sales techniques. I also developed a self-study manual to go with the field experience portion of the sales reps' training. The client loved our product, and many of our client's employees said it was the most effective and comprehensive training they've had. They're considering a second phase, for which we'd be on board. Since I'm a freelancer, my second story will be about my work for another client. I recently wrote a direct response sales letter for a company who was new to the idea of direct response. The copy I wrote reflected the company's low-key presence, but had the persuasive elements of a direct response piece. This client was thrilled with the high and fast response rate generated by my letter.
