Operation and maintenance of a variety of laboratory and cleanroom instrumentation and equipment. POLYMER CHEMISTRY Synthesis - experimental multi-step polymerization using fluorinated diamines, dianhydrides, acrylates, maleic anhydride, methyl vinyl ether, and vinyl pyrrolidone to produce copolymers, also polyimides in solution or as precipitate slurry, varying conditions, addition order, stoichiometry, materials, catalysts, and other agents, in glass resin kettles and flasks and also in autoclave reactors, at 250 ml to 5 liter scale. PHOTO DEFINABLE RESINS: PD-1, PD-2, PD-7, PD-9, PD-14, PD-15, PD-16 Multistep synthesis involving capping of dianhydride, diamine addition to form polyamic acid, imidization, followed by esterification. Reaction mass is filtered and precipitated, resin is washed to specific pH, filtered and oven dried. PHOTO RESISTS: HD-2010, HD-4104, HD-8820, XP-7100 Formulation of product materials from back bone resins and photo package ingredients for functional testing. POLYIMIDE COATINGS: PD-5878, PI - 2566, PI - 2611, PI - 2525, HD-3007 One pot synthesis at room temperature involving the titration of diamine with dianhydride to achieve a target molecular weight and viscosity, followed by capping of diamine. At Sarnoff: Methacrylic Acid / Methyl Methacrylate copolymers (experimental binders for color CRT phosphors) At GAF/ISP: Methyl Vinyl Ether / Maleic Anhydride copolymers (denture adhesives and tarter control toothpastes) Acrylic Acid / Vinyl Pyrrolidone anionic copolymers (encapsulating, emulsifying, and dispersing aids) Polyvinylpyrrolidone crosslinked polymers (excipient, tablet disintegrant / binder for pharmaceuticals) Polysodium Acrylate emulsion thickening polymers (hand creams and other personal care products) Styrene / Vinyl Pyrrolidone emulsion copolymers (shampoo coater / opacifier) REACTION SYSTEM ASSEMBLY Specification, allocation, and assembly of laboratory apparatus such as glassware, agitators, heating elements with controllers, pumps, and other equipment and instruments as needed for experimental synthesis and product material testing. Facilitation of stainless steel tubing/valves for liquid and gas feed, also electrical wiring for control and heating circuits. FABRICATION, MODIFICATION, REPAIR, and UPGRADING Parts for laboratory instruments and assemblies for experimental configurations. ANALYTICAL SUPPORT Method development and data interpretation to support R&D of new products and investigation of issues for customer support, also maintenance and repair of instruments. WAFER FAB CLEANROOM Photolithography of experimental materials and product samples on silicon wafers, by spincoating, I-line and broad band exposure, and aqueous development to study film retention and minimum exposure dose. Coating, exposure, and curing of candidate materials to obtain free standing films at a specified thickness for thermal analysis and mechanical testing. Photonic and thermal curing of polyimide films. Particle count by liquid and laser methods to study stability of product material over time under various storage conditions. OPTICAL-ELECTRONIC DEVICES E-beam evaporation of precious metals upon semiconductor wafers for production of optical-electronic devices, including HF etching and inspection under a microscope. CRT DEVICE FABRICATION Compounding - suspensions of picture tube phosphor with a photoresist of sodium dichromate and Poly (vinyl alcohol), and experimental high molecular weight candidate polymers. Fabrication - of screens by spincoating photoresist on glass, UV exposure, then development. Profilometry - of coating thickness of hardened layer of phosphor on glass. Curing - phosphor coating by baking miniature screens in a tube furnace. Spectroradiometry - of luminescence and color of irradiated phosphor on screens.
