Major Responsibilities
The biocompatibility project encompasses an investigation of and evaluation of all the materials used in our labs for biological purposes and otherwise. There are three main prosthetic implants (auditory, retinal and cortical) directly related to this biocompatibility research. The procedures and research performed for this project are new and have not been executed before. I was charged with the challenge of developing and implementing research methods including acquisition, characterization, analysis, cleaning and sterilization procedures for the materials. I was also involved in the planning and executing of the surgical procedures for the implant as well as the tissue sectioning, histological preparation and analysis. A lab was needed to analyze tissue sections for this study and I was responsible for learning the techniques required in order to establish a histological lab on site.
