Performs routine and complex tasks in the pathology department. Embeds, cuts, mounts human specimen on slide and stains for the examination by the pathologist. Assits pathologist, providing:cassettes, forms, and assists him or her grossing. Assits with frozen sections. Maintains all equipment, cryostat, microtomes, embedding station, all Venatan stainers, in order to ensure accurate and appropriate performance. Frequent contact with physicians and nursing staff to explain specimen requirements and obtain information necessary for the pathologist examination.Processes specimens according to department procedures. Embeds tissues , stains slides, processes cytologic material according to established procedures. Utilizes quality control on a routine basis.Ensures tissue processor, cryostat, Ventana instrumens, and other stainers are properly maintained. Documents preventive maintenanceand problem shooting.Records temperatues on equipments and instruments on daily basis. Performs weekly inventory of supplies in the department and oders when replenishment is indicated. Pick-up specimens from departments and logs in giving each specimen an identifying number.Files blocks and slides in a manner for easy retrieval .Strives to maintain a good working relationship with other departments and co-workers. Participates in CQI efforts of the organization.Ensures that compliance wtih regulatory and accrediation requirements , such as keeping manuals up to date.Works together as part of team effort.Complies with appropriate CDC hand hygiene guide lines and use of OSHA safety devices.
