Academic * 2016 - Present, Currently serving as a Lead Guest Editor of the scientific journal Breast Positions Cancer: Basic and Clinical Research for a supplement project on "Breast Cancer: Drug resistance and metastasis." and Accomplishment * Managed multi-disciplinary team of scientists and physician collaborators as PI to develop a family of in vivo selective multiple-quantum coherence transfer (Sel-MQC) methods for fast magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging (MRSI) of human breast cancer. Applications include clinical diagnosis and monitoring therapeutic responses of extracranial cancers and high-grade brain cancer. Patents and publications available from the original research and inventions. * Coordinated a collaborative research team as PI to develop bacterial-based cancer therapy and imaging in animal tumor models. Utilized genetically modified attenuated Salmonella typhimurium and E. coli strains to express anti-cancer proteins optical or magnetic resonance imaging markers for selective amplification in tumor tissues. Rapid tumor tissue destruction was observed with active immune responses. * Led a collaborative research team as PI to investigate fat-1 gene therapy of breast cancer. The fat-1 gene which encodes an n-3 fatty acid desaturase converting omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) to n-3 PUFA suppressed not only breast cancer but also tamoxifen-resistant breast cancer and metastasis in transgenic fat-1 mice. * Directed a research team as PI to develop multi-dimensional ENMR techniques to study protein mixtures in solution for structural characterization of biological signaling processes with potential applications in drug discovery using proteomic samples. Discovered a new phenomenon of NMR physics - i.e. intermolecular multiple quantum coherences (iMQCs) derived from long distance spin dipolar interactions. The iMQCs have been employed for contrast enhancement of MRI with medical applications. * Computer optimization of shaped RF pulses for isotropic mixing in total correlation NMR spectroscopy (TOCSY). Potential applications in structural characterization of proteins and in vivo magnetic resonance spectroscopy to detection tissue biochemicals for cancer diagnosis.
