Daily Duties at Barnes & Noble:
Partner to senior executives on development initiatives, management compensation, incentive plans, and communications, and work with external consultants. Developed HR policies and performance metrics to control costs in safety, unemployment insurance (resulting in more than $500K savings from unemployment insurance, workman’s comp (reduced to 50% industry standards), employee engagement and embedding (reduced attrition to just under 7%/an); interpreted state and federal laws – and advised senior executives on forthcoming changes or exiting compliance issues; directed all generalist activities over full spectrum of HR issues; assessed HR initiatives against human performance and provided impact statements. Created high potential (HIPO) program, succession planning and leadership development; recruitment/selection of site managers/directors; managed reductions in force (RIF) resulting from compliance failures; mitigated existing ICE and Workman’s Comp practices to eliminate penalties; project partner in planning NOOK project for Reno DC and Palo Alto facility, while planning RIF for New Jersey. Managed continuous workplace improvement through job analysis and performance improvement; 600 to 800 employees. Travel periodically to NJ and NY.
