Daily Duties at Preferred Physicians Medical Risk Retention Group:

Managed 23 different states involving medical malpractice of anesthesiologist only. I took the losses directly by phone from the doctors. I would obtain as much information from them as possible about the loss as well as being empathic. Sometimes, you would get a call about an accident within a few hours of it happening. This also included deaths. I obtained the medical records and reviewed them, assigned defense counsel and supervised discovery. I worked with defense counsel by making suggestions on experts, as well as whether to settle or take the claim to trial. I attended roundtables with the claims manager and other adjuster along with an anesthesiologist who was on staff to review our findings. I had the opportunities to attend depositions, pre-trials, settlement conferences, arbitrations and mediations and trials across the country. Two days before my final day at the company, our job description was changed so that we had to be an attorney. From then on the company only hired attorneys as adjusters. I had worked beside attorney adjusters managing the same number of states and the claims of the same difficulty. The only difference was in the pay scale. I have spent 12 years of my career managing medical malpractice claims of various practices for a company only handling doctors of osteopathy that went under and for doctors of various backgrounds including dentists.
