Daily Duties at Boeing International Space Station Team:
Relocated to Houston to join the Node Control Software team on the International Space Station. Promoted to a management position in 1997. Directed team of 20 Houston-based Boeing engineers working on the first release of the software and 10 Honeywell engineers in Phoenix who developed additional new features for a second release. Traveled frequently between Houston and Phoenix to manage the teams, review schedules and resolve product issues. - Successfully launched Node Control Software in 1998, the first American software on the Space Station. The astronaut team reports that the software has continued to run “flawlessly.” - Assembled new team to develop a Hub Module for NASA for the International Space Station, while continuing second release of the Node Control Software (30 members on combined development teams). Introduced new software development processes and tools: UML and Rational Rose. - Transitioned maintenance of software controlling the Space Station’s photo arrays (Photovoltaic and Power Management Control Assemblies), from Canoga Park CA to Houston. Took Houston team members to train with the software’s key architects in Canoga Park on all the processes, products and hardware. - Persuaded IT team and Chief Engineer to allow implementation of software project management tools developed by Canoga Park engineers in Houston, a significant improvement over earlier spreadsheets and project schedules that led to earned value accounting. - Effectively used teleconferences, webex and frequent travel to manage software projects across the US and help geographically dispersed resources function as one team. Earned numerous team awards for meeting milestones.
