Daily Duties at Lumeta:

Engineering director for a leading private network assurance software company of 70+ employees focused on managing network risk and security compliance with over 150 premiere customers in government and commercial markets. Responsibilities include the management and technical leadership of development (both UNIX and Windows products), quality assurance, technical support, manufacturing, and information technology. Successfully recruited, hired, trained, and provided structure and process for teams to effectively interoperate and expand. Initiated and developed processes to allow for seamless visibility into each teams’ activities. The processes allow for resource balancing, business justification for staff augmentation, performance measurements, and a means to gauge overall metrics of engineering. Managed system development life cycle (SDLC) and have continually improved the development and quality assurance processes over releases. Tools such as Mercury Quality Center and Quicktest Pro were put in place to better manage the quality of product. Processes were also developed to manage and ensure product adherence to U.S. government Security and Technical Implementation Guidelines (STIG). Led the technical transition of company’s service solution to a product oriented solution. The solution was delivered three months ahead of schedule and resulted in the company’s first $1+ million sale. The solution consists of several interrelated discovery processes that finds routes and routers, hosts, servers, wireless access points, unauthorized connections or hosts, and perimeter leaks. The software is deployed in leading Fortune 500 as well as classified government networks. The hardware platform is a hardened UNIX/Intel configuration and utilizes technologies such as: C/C++, UNIX shell, Perl/CGI, PostgreSQL, Apache, SSL, TCP/IP, UDP, SNMP, ICMP, and routing protocols. Provided the technical leadership in revamping the product by replacing the proprietary backend with a more modern Java 2 platform (J2EE)/PostgreSQL environment. This will address scalability issues (for larger networks), allow for third party integrators, and allow for a single stack for data analysis/presentation for Lumeta products. Data validity testing suites were developing utilizing TestNG and Perl scripts. These tests were critical in the reconciliation data between the releases. Code was also profiled to figure out the performance hitters and where code could be streamlined. A separate data-mining product utilizing Microsoft technologies was revamped utilizing more modern tools such as C#, Visual C++, XML, .NET framework, and Infragistics Windows controls. Both products utilize a common J2EE/database stack with access provided externally via Service Oriented Architecture Protocol (SOAP). Other technologies utilized include: CVS, Bugzilla, Eclipse, Maven, JSP, JDBC, Spring, Hibernate, WDSL, TestNG, Tomcat, and mod_perl. The overall technical success and direction of the company’s products has resulted in significant industry recognition and awards including Red Herring Top 100 Innovators, Federal Computer Week Top 10 in the Federal Market, Computerworld Top 100 Innovative Technologies, Best of Interop Finalist, New Jersey’s Finest 50, and Deloitte Fast 50 Rising Star.

What they like about Lumeta:

Working in an organization that is technologically advanced, creative, and innovative is critical in your assessment of hiring companies. Less important to you are stability of the organization, the length of time an organization has been in business, and the business' plans for the future. You prefer a fast-moving company that will take risks to achieve its goals and objectives. The length of time the company has been in business is irrelevant. Maintaining status quo is unnecessary. You thrive on change, uncertainty and the upside of potential business risks, especially those associated with innovation. Stability for the long haul is not nearly as important as is working in an atmosphere that is charged with a sense of urgency and constant change.
