Daily Duties at Idaho Department Of Correction:
1. Inmate supervision. supervises inmates in work, living, and recreation situations; defines work duties for inmates and evaluates their performance; counsels inmates regarding problems, institution programs, and behavior standards; writes recommendations for inmate custody, work, or training; provides input to treatment and program staff regarding custody; monitors inmate movements to various areas and facilities. 2. Security and protection. conducts searches to seize evidence and controlled or unauthorized substances; conducts investigations as the on-scene officer to include interviewing witnesses, protecting evidence, and writing incident reports; testifies at hearings or in court; persuades inmates to cease inappropriate behavior; restrains inmates by force or special tactics; operates locking and communications equipment; dispenses and oversees use of clothing, bedding, personal supplies, and work and recreation equipment; takes emergency actions and uses weapons and riot-control devices in fires, riots, escapes, and fights; patrols defined areas; makes security checks of offenders on work release or personal furlough in the community. 3. Leadwork/Supervision. keeps time and attendance records; assigns specific duties to staff; inspects posts during shifts to ensure officers are performing adequately; mediates correctional officer disputes and duty problems; observes and evaluates correctional officer performance and recommends personnel actions; may supervise a unit during a shift in the absence of the supervisor; recommends changes in procedures, scheduling, and assignments; mediates or attempts to solve volatile or difficult inmate disputes; detects and attempts to alleviate potential security, protection, or inmate management problems; performs special assignments as directed by the supervisor. 4. Training. trains correctional officers in special tactics, self-defense, weapons usage, crisis management techniques, and on specific post duties and procedures; ensures staff is informed of institution rules and procedures.
