Daily Duties at Southern California Edison:
Work in the Portfolio Planning and Analysis department within Southern California Edison’s (SCE) Power Supply Organizational Unit and Emergency Operation Center. Work in the Short Term Demand Forecasting (STDF) Group within the Portfolio Planning and Analysis Department as an operational meteorologist supporting SCE’s forecasting of electricity demand, hydro and renewable generation, demand response as well as storm response and business resiliency functions. Major responsibilities include forecasting weather, electricity demand, renewable generation, and demand response program performance. Work with the Incident Commander and the Public Section Leader serving as the SME during high impact weather events and natural disasters that impact the transmission and distribution of energy to central and southern CA. Involved with the daily EOC operations including planning, preparing, briefing and exercising to mitigate future natural and manmade disasters. Forecast weather at a number of weather stations throughout southern and central California and the West Coast from a-few-hours-ahead to 7-days-out on the daily basis; generate ranges of weather forecasts to represent uncertainty; compare the in-house forecasts to those of the vendors; Send alerts about extreme weather to grid operations and business resiliency and provide daily updates during the storm events; Advice energy forecasters, traders, planners, grid operations and business resiliency staff about weather forecasts and answer weather-related questions; Create multi day-ahead wind and solar generation forecasts and/or review the vendor’s forecast; Evaluate National Weather Service (NWS) and other suppliers’ long-range (1 to 3 months out) weather forecast outlooks and present own long-range weather outlook at monthly and quarterly planning meetings; Track in-house and vendor weather forecasts for accuracy over time; continuously improve in-house weather forecasting skills and statistical weather forecasting models, and work with vendors on improving their weather forecasting services; Support the planning for and construction of a company-wide Weather Data Repository; mange, store, clean, and distribute the weather data to downstream users as needed; Develop methods to produce in-house high-granularity weather forecasts and/or review vendor forecasts, identify outliers and missing data, and clean or fill the data; Support operational activities of the team when needed including executing day-ahead and extended-day-ahead forecasts, provide hour-ahead updates and prepare seasonal forecasts. Maintain a safety conscious work environment by following Edison safety protocols and safe work practices. During fire weather activation work at the emergency operations center providing detail weather briefings, analysis of transmission and distribution circuits impacted by fire, weather or other natural disasters to mitigate outages and damage to the community. Provide the Incident Commander with detail analysis to support executive decisions. Provide environmental data using GIS to analyze high impact weather events that will impact the distribution and transmission of energy across 50000 miles of lines. Work in the emergency operations center providing briefings throughout the planning cycle to the Incident Commander and general staff. This includes environmental assessments on hazmat issues.
