Daily Duties at Mondi South Africa :

*Continually monitored Mondi South Africa Group tax processes to ensure they were compliant with group tax strategies; reviewed group transactions, deals, and contracts and provided advice on the efficacy of tax structures; and liaised with the Mondi Worldwide Group Head of Tax to maximize group tax efficiency. *Supported internal departments and Mondi South Africa group companies to detect/neutralise tax risks. *Cultivated relationships with South African Revenue Service (SARS) to facilitate the professional handling of all Mondi South Africa Group tax issues at SARS. *Monitored regular statutory tax returns (direct and indirect tax) to ensure they were accurately prepared and submitted to SARS; validated compliance with all tax legislation; and reviewed subordinate’s work output to ensure Value Added Tax (VAT) refunds/payments for all group entities were refunded/paid to SARS within deadlines. *Validated the accuracy of monthly VAT input claimed on Mondi South Africa Group entities' VAT returns; reviewed the accuracy and alignment to tax legislation of all annual Research and Development (R&D) allowance forms before submission to the Department of Science and Technology. *Reviewed quarterly tax estimates and annual tax budget calculations for accuracy/reasonability; ensured the validity of monthly, estimate, annual budget, and year-end tax computations; used SAP general ledger and MIRAS to report all Mondi South Africa Group entities including current and deferred tax calculations. *Produced tax notes (current/deferred tax) for disclosure in annual reports, to meet IFRS requirements. *Analysed the accuracy and completeness of all prior year tax reporting adjustments and all true-ups of prior year tax records per tax computations to ensure accurate group tax reporting. *Liaised with and supported Price Waterhouse Coopers external auditors in conducting their assignments in Mondi South Africa Group tax entities. *Researched relevant tax issues that directly impacted the Group and formulated tax opinions on various tax queries from the business to ensure continuous process improvements. *Attended regular update workshops on relevant tax legislation to obtain/maintain knowledge of all amendments, and to better understand new taxes that were introduced; advised relevant staff on changes in tax legislation that affected them, to ensure they were accounted for and to avoid non-compliance interest/penalties. *Provided daily direction, supervision, mentoring, motivation, training, and support to the Tax Accountant and two Assistant Tax Accountants to build their skills and bolster performance. *Reinforced department/team objectives/targets to ensure a strong focus on performance indicators. *Addressed performance discrepancies through training/development, or by using the disciplinary code and procedures when warranted.
