Daily Duties at Anthem, Inc.:
Elevating and Enhancing Messaging. As Medicaid Messaging Director, conducted proposal messaging and Blue, Pink, Red and Gold reviews for 25 proposals, ranging from 100 to 5,000 pages to develop and deliver highly engaging, winning documents. Medicaid division retained top-two win-rate (97%) among national Medicaid competitors. Developed win themes, proof points and Proud Ofs to quantify and qualify opportunity-specific and national strengths; counter and ghost competitors; and leverage capture and competitive intelligence for whole proposals and individual sections. Drove the collection and organization of state-specific differentiators and specific, impactful data to highlight our value propositions and strengths for use by Writers and SMEs. Created and refined messaging tools to be used more effectively and consistently to: 1) qualify messaging (Real Stories, letters of support, Medicaid Messaging Toolkit, member, community partner and provider testimonials); 2) quantify messaging (Results & Successes callouts); and 3) do both (Spotlight callouts, icons, new and refined graphics). Based on a rudimentary tracking sheet and no process upon joining the team, created processes, tools, template, tracking mechanism, work group structure and library to meet health plan-specific needs for member Real Stories (RSs). Led RS work groups, composed of six to 15 executive, clinical, operations, marketing and provider relations staff in each state, to identify and gather true member stories reflecting Anthem’s caring, member-first approach and mapping to each state’s hot-button issues and our solutions. Had the honor of interviewing Anthem Case Managers and Medicaid members in order to draft all RSs (five to 35/proposal) and longer versions as leave-behinds for Anthem Public Relations and state government representatives. Demonstrated abilities as a talented editor and creative wordsmith, distilling complex information, polishing text, bringing clarity and delivering poignant, effective, attention-getting messages to target audiences. Training/Mentoring. Adeptly advised SMEs, writers and health plan staff to improve clarity and accuracy; meet text and graphic standards; and ensure proposals are clear and concise. Guided and mentored: 1) Writers, proposal team members and health plan staff about the purpose and use of messaging tools; and 2) less experienced Editors, Proposal Managers and new Writers/SMEs, teaching them smart proposal messaging and editing techniques and sharing tips and wisdom. Trained new Managing Editor. Continuous Improvement. To streamline proposal processes and enhance proposal responses, served on the following work groups: executive proposal process improvement, lessons learned, naming/positioning, strategy documents library, style guide improvement, video RSs and the innovation council. As acting Managing Editor for seven months, took the initiative to query Writers about the Style Guide format and content to determine what works/opportunities for improvement. Created and distributed new, innovative draft Style Guide to Writers, Proposal Managers and Book Bosses for review and held feedback sessions with the goal of improving ease of use and proposal quality. Launched new Style Guide to rave reviews. Demonstrates superior ability to lead both internal and consultant teams of SMEs, Writers and graphics and production staff, as well as diverse teams composed of geographically dispersed businesses/organizations with varying proposal experience and resources. Reviews and edits proposal responses for consistency, compliance, win theme incorporation, solution accuracy, and other elements across sections and volumes and throughout Blue, Pink, Red and Gold review cycles. Adeptly advises SMEs, Writers and technical staff to improve clarity and accuracy; meet text and graphic standards; and ensure proposals are clear and concise.
