Daily Duties at Internal Revenue Service:

My duties as an Internal Revenue Agent included auditing and examining the books and records of individuals, corporations, trusts, partnerships, and LLCs to determine their correct federal tax liability. As an IRS Field Agent I was authorized to conduct criminal investigations, summons records and testimony, and act on behalf of the agency so as to protect the interests of the US Government. I planned the scope and depth of audits of businesses by evaluating internal controls, interviewing key personnel, and inspecting financial records such as the Financial Statements, General Ledgers, and Adjusting Journal Entries. I also evaluated various subsidiary ledgers and inventory calculations, work papers and journals to make a determination about an operation's compliance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP). I gathered evidence to support my opinion on the reasonableness and accuracy of an operation's business practices, accounting methods and assumptions – as well as their income tax liability reporting. I made thorough use of generally accepted auditing standards (GAAS) and other procedures (such as substantive tests and analytical techniques), and I also made extensive use of risk analysis, interviews, tests of controls, statistical sampling, and standard deviation analysis. I received extensive training in the Oil and Gas Industry (O&G) and conducted several dozen O&G audits in the Permian Basin area of West Texas and Eastern NM. I made many (accepted) criminal fraud referrals to the IRS Criminal Investigation Division and was the cooperating Agent on several fraud cases. I also logged over 770 documented hours as a formal classroom instructor during my career including a 2006 (5 week) assignment in Dallas, TX where I was the Lead Instructor for a panel of three instructors and 25 new-hire Agents and the topic was complex Partnership and S-Corp. tax law.

What they like about Internal Revenue Service:

The social vibrance of a hiring firm is very important to you. Your ability to make and maintain friendships there is a critical part of your decision. You would likely be dissatisfied with a workplace that is quiet, cold, or otherwise not particularly social. When you investigate a new hiring company, ask recruiters, managers, and potential co-workers about the social life and opportunities there. This is especially important when you are relocating; moving dramatically alters your social sphere both inside and outside the workplace.
