Daily Duties at Weirton Steel Corporation:

Was employed as an I&C Engineer for the Weirton Steel Corp. (1991 to 1999) in Weirton, WV, providing engineering support and design upgrades for the operation and maintenance of I&C equipment required to monitor and operate four blast furnaces, basic oxygen plant and sinter plant for the primary operation of the steel mill. This included Project Engineering support for development, testing and delivery of new Distributed Control System (Fisher Provox) and field devices (various transmitters and sensors) used to monitor/control six turbo-blowers used to generate the cold blast for the blast furnaces. Specified and procured Oxygen sensors and transmitters with explosion proof and intrinsically safe design features. This project allowed reduction of operation personnel by centralizing the operation of the turbo- blowers. In addition, served as the Project Engineer of a $10 million dollar project to upgrade the output of turbo- blowers from 125,000 CFM at 30 Psig to 165,000 CFM at 45 Psig. This included upgrade of blades for both the steam turbine and the compressor end of the machine, as well as the installation of new support systems such as surface condensers, air ejectors, Bently Nevada vibration monitoring system, etc. This project helped to increase iron production. In this role was responsible for oversight of various construction craft personnel as well as interface/follow-up with various contractors/suppliers. Worked closely with the Fuel Department (I&C Maintenance Dept.) in providing both hands-on and technical support and coordinated support between the Fuel Department and Operations.

What they like about Weirton Steel Corporation:

Working in an organization that is technologically advanced, creative, and innovative is critical in your assessment of hiring companies. Less important to you are stability of the organization, the length of time an organization has been in business, and the business' plans for the future. You prefer a fast-moving company that will take risks to achieve its goals and objectives. The length of time the company has been in business is irrelevant. Maintaining status quo is unnecessary. You thrive on change, uncertainty and the upside of potential business risks, especially those associated with innovation. Stability for the long haul is not nearly as important as is working in an atmosphere that is charged with a sense of urgency and constant change.
