Daily Duties at Pennsylvania Fire Department:

EXAMINED ABOUT 20 FIREMEN A DAY, AGES 30-50. I READ THEIR ECG'S WHICH WERE ALMOST ALWAYS ABNORMAL (THEIR ACTIVITY GIVES THEM A PICTURE OF AN ATHLETIC HEART, WHICH IS CONTROVERSIAL AS TO WHETHER IT IS `NORMAL' OR HEALTHY). ONE CANNOT GET AN ATHLETIC HEART PLAYING TENNIS 10 HRS ON THE WEEKEND. THESE MEN ARE VIRTUAL HAMSTERS, WHEN NOT FIGHTING FIRES THEY ARE EXERCISING CONSTANTLY AND RUNNING MILES EVERY DAY. SO THEY HAVE A SIGNIFICANTLY ENLARGED HEART WITH THICKENED WALLS, AND AN AMAZING PHYSICAL ABILITY. MY JOB WAS TO LOOK FOR EVIDENCE THAT THEY HAD LIMITATIONS LIKE CORONARY DISEASE THAT MAY HAVE BEEN BROUGHT OUT BY STRESS. USUALLY A STRESS TEST IS LIMITED TO A HEART RATE OF 85% OF THE PREDICTED MAXIMUM BY STATISTICAL STUDIES, WE WERE REQUIRED BY THE STUDY GUIDE LINES TO BRING THEM AS CLOSE TO THEIR MAXIMUM AS POSSIBLE (mAX = (220-AGE) BEATS PER MINUTE).

What they like about Pennsylvania Fire Department:

A hiring company that offers alternative approaches to pay, performance bonuses, and/or equity in the firm is very attractive to you. You're generally less interested in working for an organization offering only traditional, salary-based compensation, one with limited opportunity to acquire equity in the firm, or one that does not actively promote skill development. In addition, you are more likely to choose a company that offers a variety of internal career options, with defined career paths. You view the learning of new skills and development of your expertise as key to your career advancement. These aspects of an organization may become even more important to you as you progress in your field, and are especially critical if you change career or occupation.
