Daily Duties at Georgia Institute Of Technology:

Assist with the day to day running of the upper level biology lab courses. Further the goals of the Instructional Labs to support and foster innovation in laboratory teaching by: consistently providing for the daily needs of the instructional labs, supporting technological innovation and advances in lab safety, and supporting faculty in the development and implementation of new student laboratory experiences that align with the Institute’s Strategic Plan; Prepare reagents, media, and biological samples (bacterial, fungal, yeast strains, and mammalian cells) as needed for instructional labs. Maintain and calibrate equipment used in the labs. Communicate with lab instructors about their needs throughout the term; record and follow through to meet those needs. Communicate safety expectations to instructor and TAs, including correct use of equipment and waste handling. Follow up with TAs and/or lab instructors to check on the success of experiments. Work with lab instructor to make improvements in protocols. Keep well-organized, complete, and accurate records of all pilot studies and changes to protocols. Maintain records of frozen culture collection. Record and communicate all prep errors or unexpected results, investigate the causes, write up a plan for prevention/improvement with supervisor and put it into action. Maintain lab spaces and prep lab in a clean, organized, and safe condition Know the chemical, supply, and equipment inventory including location. Anticipate and communicate ordering needs at the start of the term. Complete the bi-annual chemical inventory for the instructional labs. Communicate any issues with supplies, equipment, and facilities to supervisor. Follow best practices for wet lab work. Follow safety recommendations from EH&S when conducting lab work. During periods where prep needs are lower, work with supervisor on special projects. Share suggestions for improving prep protocols, student lab experiences, TA training, safety, and any other related topic.
