• Performed a sentiment analysis on the text in the MD&A (Management Discussion and Analysis) section of company annual reports as a component of a detecting system for potential company issues. ➢ Devised an SVM model to predict company bankruptcy by classifying the sentiment features of the MD&A text filed by more than 20,000 companies in 2013 – 2017, achieving more than 80% accuracy. ➢ Enhanced F-1 score of model testing by 22.5% via grid-searching optimal parameters and reducing the dimension of feature space using principal component analysis (PCA). ➢ Examined the data pattern in the sentiment feature space by K-means clustering and summarized the high-frequency words used by the companies with potential bankruptcy risk. • Wrote a library (Python) processing MD&A text to support multiple related studies with ensured quality and reliability. ➢ Developed a web crawling program to download MD&A text from the Calcbench platform, parsed HTML and imported data into the database. ➢ Compiled query methods to provide preprocessed data required by related projects.
