Daily Duties at Nuance Communications Inc.:

I held three management positions at Nuance: Manager, Mobile Cloud Services (MCS) Database Services; Manager, Global Hosting Operations (GHO) Database Services; and Manager Database Development and Production Oracle DBA. I was a working DBA manager of 5 to 12 DBAs for production, development and test databases in Oracle, MySQL, MS SQL Server, Informix, PostgreSQL, Cassandra, and Hadoop. I was responsible for the day to day task assignments, training, and employee development for the direct DBAs and contract negotiation and approval for contracted employees. I was responsible for incident management and root cause analysis/investigation for the database and database application environments as well was investigating or assigning a DBA/SA/NA/AA to diagnose performance issues and troubleshooting system environment issues. Depending on the environment we had to maintain SOX, PCI, and PII documentation and reports which I was responsible for monitoring, correcting audit exceptions, and approving audit reports. As a Development Manager and DBA, I was responsible for 3 to 5 database development engineers to design, develop, and maintain database application software to support Tweddle automotive software products Entune, Enform and Uconnect. I developed a number of different modules for securing 3rd party username/password information and implementing the replication strategy within Shareplex for both 1-way and 2-way replication.

What they like about Nuance Communications Inc.:

Working in an organization that is technologically advanced, creative, and innovative is critical in your assessment of hiring companies. Less important to you are stability of the organization, the length of time an organization has been in business, and the business' plans for the future. You prefer a fast-moving company that will take risks to achieve its goals and objectives. The length of time the company has been in business is irrelevant. Maintaining status quo is unnecessary. You thrive on change, uncertainty and the upside of potential business risks, especially those associated with innovation. Stability for the long haul is not nearly as important as is working in an atmosphere that is charged with a sense of urgency and constant change.

Websites
Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation

http://www.rmef.org

I have been a member of the RMEF since 2008 and a chapter committee member since about 2009 for the Mt. Rainier chapter so I spend a good deal of time volunteering my spare time to the RMEF.
Oracle Technology Network

http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/index.html

I like going through the recent articles to keep up on the new Oracle technology and application of the technology in real life!
Datastax

http://www.datastax.com

I go to the Datastax website to keep up on the documentation and use cases that Datastax has on their website. They contribute heavily to Apache Cassandra and based on my experience have a pretty good product.
Database Journal

Great place to visit for training and idea exchange if you are running into any issues.
