Daily Duties at Bp Biofuels:

Global Technology Center, San Diego, CA (2011 to 2013) Senior Biochemical Engineer, Process Scale up Project Manager Responsible for the implementation of sustainable processes at large scale on fermentation, yeast culture propagation and enzymatic saccharification. • Project Manager. Participated in capital projects for cellulosic ethanol of up to US$ 300 million. Supervised and coordinated technology transfer in close association with demonstration plant personnel, regulatory, engineering and research teams. • Led process scale up from lab to demo scale working with engineering; process modeling; metabolic engineering, fermentation and enzyme research and high throughput screening (HTS) groups. The projects include: C5/C6 Saccharomyces strains fermentation and propagation process scale up, enzyme production, the study of different configurations for enzymatic saccharification and the use of antimicrobials at large scale including regulatory requirements. • Developed innovative ideas to obtain higher alcohol titers in the sugar cane ethanol process (Brazil). The projects included improved tolerance to higher temperatures, osmotic stress and ethanol tolerance plus the optimization of the cell recycling process. Worked on the improvement and selection of C6 yeast strains. Worked in the implementation of novel technologies to measure biomass, metabolic rates, glucan, sugars and products. • Work resulted in two invention disclosures and a provisional patent within the LC ethanol space BP-EBI (Energy Biosciences Institute), University of California, Berkeley, CA (2009-2011) IP Project Manager in fermentation, metabolic engineering and LC depolymerization EBI is a joint project between BP and UC Berkeley. Its main goal is to produce innovative research and technology that will result in commercially feasible biofuel processes. • Coordinated efforts with the EBI on 7 research projects focused on applications to biofuels such as: finding and improving enzymes for lignocellulose depolymerization (cellulases, hemicellulases, etc.) and C5 C6 yeast strains. The technologies utilized included metagenomics, protein engineering, high throughput screening, metabolic engineering and directed evolution. • Evaluated EBI research for potential commercial and patent applications: 7 patents were filed. • Created IP: submitted 2 metabolic engineering inventions on novel biofuel processes to improve yield by fixing CO2. The work involved studies of microbial metabolic pathways (metabolic flux analysis) and pathway optimization. • Collaborated with a third party on bio methane production. Developed competitive intelligence through ASPEN process modeling and process design. • Provided technical support to the EBI on fermentation science and enzyme technology particularly on hemicellulases/cellulases and biomass conversion. Led internal research projects on lignocellulose hydrolysis, enzymes benchmark performance and yeast strain selection.
