Daily Duties at Depatrment Of Veteran Affairs:

Responsible for initiating and carrying out a variety of administrative duties in support of patient care on one or more of the inpatient units while serving as the key contact for veterans and visitors, providing information and assistance and acting upon administrative matters in the veteran's interest. Assists both the veteran and the professional staff in coordinating scheduled procedures and follow-up appointments. Ensures that Chief Medical Officer Approval has been obtained prior to transport of any patient to other non-VA facilities, assuring necessary reports, records of prior treatment and consultation forms accompany the patient. Identifies delays or problems in processing an inpatients' scheduled treatment or follow-up care and, as appropriate, will review the case, determine the problem or cause of delay, and initiate action to expedite the needed care. Assists in orienting and advising staff, house-staff, and nursing personnel concerning VA regulations, policies, and procedures on patient care administration matters. Advises and assists in the orientation of patients and professional staff concerning ward routines. Serves as communications coordinator for the inpatient units, receiving telephone calls and responding or referring these to the appropriate resource person. Obtains all key information needed and initiates medical administrative processing of physician orders before referring the treatment and medication orders to the nursing staff. Initiates consent forms for authorization to perform surgery and other invasive procedures, blood transfusions and HIV testing. Files test results in patient's charts for professional staff review, keeping the inpatient record current and accurate. On admission of a new patient to the unit, initiates a new hardback medical record, assists in orienting patient and family, notifies nursing unit personnel and physicians, reviews record for possible allergies and makes appropriate identification labels and arm bands, making appropriate entries into VISTA to identify allergies, and obtain any prior treatment records needed by staff. Transcribes a variety of physician's orders, STAT and routine, involving patient activities, diets, tests, and medications on a timely basis to various charts. Social Worker on behalf of patients for personal and discharge planning needs. Upon notification that a patient will be discharged, gathers all active and prior treatment records and assembles into the consolidated health record in correct chronological and sequential order. Arranges for transfer to other facilities that the medical record is in proper format, signatures obtained, and chart is complete. Advises physician to dictate the hospital summary before the patient's release. Monitors completion of History and Physical within 24 hours of admission. Utilizes and maintains computer devices to perform most processing and scheduling functions on the inpatient units. Participates in Care Line Health Unit Coordinator meetings and in training opportunities, both mandatory and discretionary.
