•Composed research and grant proposal, awarded student research grant •Developed a testable hypothesis and methods to establish the relationship between alkaloid composition in berberine containing plants and antimicrobial activity •Successfully extracted alkaloid compounds of interest from live plant matter, developed alkaloid profiles using HPLC technology, and tested compounds of interest in an antimicrobial assay •Developed solubility profiles on isolated alkaloid compounds •Composed a growth response study on compounds of interest and Staphylococcus aureus bacteria •Trained in sterile technique, broth to plate and plate to plate bacterial culture techniques, micro-dilutions, micro-pipetting, HPLC analysis, TLC analysis, Mass Spectrometry, IR Spectroscopy, and Spectrophotometry •Research is currently being manifested into a manuscript and will be submitted for publication
