(general) Created strategy, vision, and implementation plan for 3 year transition from single network, physical infrastructure to a 90% virtualized, multi-tier, multi-network zone data center. Move, standardize and modernize 93 applications spread across 190 environments that support over 25 million active users. (situation) Lines of business had an aging infrastructure that was both physical, with 50% > 7 years old and 30% between 5/7 years. (action) Created a transition plan for all infrastructure and applications to move from physical to virtual. (result) Reduce aging infrastructure by 91%, removing $4.2 million in replacement costs. (situation) Existing policies and standards permitted the use of any firewall port and protocol across all network environments. (action) Implemented standards, policies and governance processes to enforce compliance. (result) reduced technical complexity of firewall policies from 20,000 to 2,800 in 18 months (situation) 93 applications across multiple network segments, production/development environments and operating system platforms had manual, individual configuration and deployment processes. (action) Created standard processes and added technologies such as Puppet, Chef and via scripting, automated over 75% of all platform configuration/patching and software deployments. (result) Decrease infrastructure provisioning of middleware by 96% through automation and scripting.
