Daily Duties at Staten Island University Hospital:
Set up the Cardiac Anesthesia portion of a new Cardiac Surgery program. Ordered and organized all of the Machines, equipment, and medications needed to give safe, excellent care to critically ill patients. Added medications to the hospital formulary. Wrote policy and job descriptions for the new division. Hired Cardiac Anesthesiologists and Anesthesia Monitoring Assistants. Evaluated the competency of all Cardiac Anesthesiologists and Anesthesia Monitoring Assistants and intervened when issues were seen. Established a perioperative echocardiography service that was utilized on all cardiac cases, other critically ill patients in the cardiac operating room, the cardiothoracic ICU, and occasionally in the general operating room. Created and updated all associated paperwork (cardiac anesthesia record, echo report forms, and billing forms). I was able to create protocols for each cardiac procedure in order to standardize care among all of the cardiac anesthesiologists. This had the effect of improving safety. I organized and presented all Quality Assurance reports. Oversaw all Performance Improvement initiatives such as: improving on-time start times, improving intraoperative blood glucose control, improving adherence to CMS recommendations, and decreasing time until patients were able to be removed from the ventilator after surgery. I retrained two newly hired cardiac anesthesiologists who had not practiced cardiac anesthesia in several years. I was a participant on the blood bank committee and I participated on an ad-hoc committee dealing with a disruptive physician. I worked closely with the hospital pharmacy management to organize the medications they prepared for the cardiac operating room and to troubleshoot medication shortages. I developed the curriculum and wrote the syllabus for residents doing their cardiac anesthesia rotation at Staten Island University Hospital. Gave approximately 6 lectures to the residents and CRNA students each month. Anesthetized many patients who were very high risk and were refused care by other anesthesiologists. When problems arose, I interacted with the anesthesia group and the hospital administration to resolve the issues.
