Daily Duties at Southern Company:
As an engineer at a nuclear operating plant, I advised and/or directed mechanical maintenance work activities, performed In-Service Test (IST) inspections, drafted rigging plans, assisted and/or monitored Local Leak Rate Testing (LLRT) in accordance with 10 CFR 50 Appendix J requirements, drafted weld isometrics, completed weld process sheets, drafted as-built notices. I assisted the engineering staff in the performance of Logic System Functional Tests (LSFT) and ASME Hydrostatic Testing in accordance with Section XI of the ASME Code. I was the program owner of the Class 1 Main Steam Safety/Relief Valves (Target Rock), and being the owner of these valves was a constant learning experience because the valves performed so poorly when I first took over the program. I was the owner of the relief valve program as well, and oversaw testing and repair/replacement of an assortment of valves (Crosby, Dresser, Kunkle, Consolidated, Teledyne Farris, etc.). I was the program owner of the check valves for the site during this time, and I was exposed to all sorts of check valves (swing checks, tilting discs, nozzle checks, lift checks, duo-checks, etc.), with all of the inherent issues in certain designs coming into full view in an aging plant. I became qualified and performed ASME Section XI applicability reviews, and conducted Original Code of Construction Investigations/Reconciliations (ASME III, ANSI B31.7, B31.1 Upgrade, B31.1, & ASME VIII). I also developed Equivalency Determinations (which is an engineering justification in a worksheet format to determine if a proposed replacement part or item has the same form, fit, and function of the item being replaced) on an as required basis to combat the obsolescence issues at the plant. I participated actively with all modifications work package implementation engineers for any Safety/Relief Valve area change (e.g., lifting lugs, de-term quick connect fittings, re-routing of air lines to improve ease of maintenance, etc.).
What they like about Southern Company:
You give high priority to hiring firms with prestige. Market reputation and prestige of a firm may be determined through on-line research, and conversations with individuals working in your target industry. Note that firms "in the public eye" receive a great deal more critical publicity and attention than those operating with more anonymity. So as you assess your employment opportunities, be sure to seek out the positive aspects of the firm's reputation in addition to noting negative publicity the company may have received.
