Daily Duties at Southern Company:

I oversee a matrixed (Owner and Contractor) organization of engineers that develop engineering reports and regulatory (NRC) letters that demonstrate that the Acceptance Criteria has been met and the Design Commitment has been upheld as described in 10 CFR 52. Engineering reports are challenged technically from a First Of A Kind perspective, as well as the regulatory letters submitted NRC. I actively engage NRC at least once per month in informal setting to discuss schedule for inspections and plans for reports, and participate on a quarterly basis (more formal) to explain how the reports will be assembled and what certain reports will include. I have led the development of specific oversight plans that guide the construction oversight or supplier oversight departments in the review of attributes specific to verifying that Design Commitments in the UFSAR will be upheld during construction or component fabrication. I directed the creation of a schedule in Primavera P6 to address departmental issues associated with lack of accountability, resource over-allocation, and lack of consistency. I actively participate in all staffing efforts for the department to ensure we hire candidates that fit our team best, and that we don't just hire those that have the best resumes. I conduct a one-on-one with each person in my group 2 times per month to understand their challenges and make sure that the workload is sustainable. I conduct staff meetings with all present once per week to discuss important project topics including, but not limited to, personnel/industrial safety, nuclear safety, human performance, due dates for and/or re-assignments of open/action items, corrective action program items, major project milestones, supplier compliance issues, construction issues, regulatory affairs issues, etc. I previously managed groups in nuclear island construction oversight and metrics.

What they like about Southern Company:

Working for a company with an emphasis on social values and helping society is a clear and important priority for you - a critical factor in who you choose to work for. In contrast to other factors, you place an organization's reputation for fairness and concern for the community above most other aspects of the company. As you search for a new job opportunity, it is usually possible to find out if the company is involved in the community and/or if it is addressing problems and issues in society. Pay special attention to non-profit organizations and those specifically involved in social action. Moreover, speaking with current and former employees should enlighten you to perceptions of the fairness of the company's leaders and the treatment of employees.
