Daily Duties at Public Counsel:
I do attorney intern pro bono work at Public Counsel in Los Angeles. The area I am focused in is consumer fraud litigation (frauds, scams, unfair practices such as predatory lending, foreclosure, construction fraud). I handle cases addressing claims and injuries in the consumer and business context which is primarily the same work handled by commercial lawyers in major firms on a daily basis. Trained in consumer litigation, I am in a position to help many victims of disreputable business operators – indigent victims, who without being charged a fee, are able to get their grievances resolved. I also work with impact cases which involve large classes of plaintiffs such as victims of higher education scams. Working in these cases help to change unfair business practices that are hurting people in the community. I am responsible for client interview, doing legal research, reviewing statutes, writing memos and writing outcome reports, as well as transcribing the progress and ultimately the resolution of the cases in the Netdocs system.
What they like about Public Counsel:
You give high priority to hiring firms with prestige. Market reputation and prestige of a firm may be determined through on-line research, and conversations with individuals working in your target industry. Note that firms "in the public eye" receive a great deal more critical publicity and attention than those operating with more anonymity. So as you assess your employment opportunities, be sure to seek out the positive aspects of the firm's reputation in addition to noting negative publicity the company may have received.
