Daily Duties at Colorado State University (Cbe Department):
I worked with a research team comprised of members from Dr. Tobet's lab (biology/anatomy), Dr. Dandy's lab (Chemical and biological engineering), and Dr. Henry's lab (Chemistry). We worked on a lab-on-chip project with a goal of creating a small device that could help create a spatially resolved chemical map of catecholamine activity in a live tissue slice. The purpose was to learn more about how individual cells communicate with other cells to allow an organ to function as one. My main duty was to design and fabricate chip devices that could transfer electrochemical data to the computer while keeping a tissue sample alive and maintaining spatial resolution of the catecholamine secretion. I also helped with the live tissue slice acquisition and the actual experimentation with the devices.
What they like about Colorado State University (Cbe Department):
You give high priority to hiring firms with prestige. Market reputation and prestige of a firm may be determined through on-line research, and conversations with individuals working in your target industry. Note that firms "in the public eye" receive a great deal more critical publicity and attention than those operating with more anonymity. So as you assess your employment opportunities, be sure to seek out the positive aspects of the firm's reputation in addition to noting negative publicity the company may have received.
