Daily Duties at Wildlife Toxicology & Disease Division, Science And Technology Branch, Environment Canada. :

I was as a researcher at Environment Canada, where I focused on the development of testing methodologies, planning and coordinating scientific projects for the characterization of microbial consortia (Bacteria, Protozoa, Algae and Fungi) and the preparation of a comprehensive report on standard operating procedures. The research involves the application of molecular genetics techniques applied to environmental microbiology issues. The most significant outcome of this research was my significant and ongoing role in the evaluation of DNA extraction methods requirements for identification of microbial communities from environmental samples. During each method evaluation, I evaluated protocol performance including chemical and physical treatment efficacy/effectiveness, DNA recovery and its purification rate, appropriate statistical methods, review and research trial designs, Canadian soil conditions and microbial communities and make scientific and regulatory recommendations to national and international stakeholder committees, industry groups and provincial and other governmental departments (such as CFIA and Health Canada) within a regulatory context.

What they like about Wildlife Toxicology & Disease Division, Science And Technology Branch, Environment Canada. :

Working in an organization that is technologically advanced, creative, and innovative is critical in your assessment of hiring companies. Less important to you are stability of the organization, the length of time an organization has been in business, and the business' plans for the future. You prefer a fast-moving company that will take risks to achieve its goals and objectives. The length of time the company has been in business is irrelevant. Maintaining status quo is unnecessary. You thrive on change, uncertainty and the upside of potential business risks, especially those associated with innovation. Stability for the long haul is not nearly as important as is working in an atmosphere that is charged with a sense of urgency and constant change.
