Daily Duties at Civil And Environmental Engineering Department, Carleton University.:
I investigated the use of large-scale of Molecular Biology techniques to determine the viability and identity of microorganisms in waste water in a disinfection process, in particular UV treatment while they were associated with particles and how they were distributed within a floc structure. For these purposes, visualizing the microorganisms in their natural environment and in three dimensional views was essential to correlate their spatial distribution to their viability and inactivation rate. That was achieved by using Fluorescent in-situ Hybridization (FISH) with specific 16S rRNA based oligonucleotide probe. The advantage of using FISH was that the method allowed us to study the number and spatial distribution of microorganisms in their natural state while they were morphologically intact. The results of this study provided insight not only into the disinfection of wastewater systems but also water systems, especially systems not using a filtration process as part of treatment. The long-term of the proposed research will be to increase the effectiveness of UV and chlorine disinfection processes on particle-associated microorganisms in water and wastewater and to ensure public health safety.
What they like about Civil And Environmental Engineering Department, Carleton University.:
You give high priority to hiring firms with prestige. Market reputation and prestige of a firm may be determined through on-line research, and conversations with individuals working in your target industry. Note that firms "in the public eye" receive a great deal more critical publicity and attention than those operating with more anonymity. So as you assess your employment opportunities, be sure to seek out the positive aspects of the firm's reputation in addition to noting negative publicity the company may have received.
