Epri High Voltage Laboratory Work Values

Daily Duties at Epri High Voltage Laboratory:

• Developed and implemented procedures for helicopter-based replacement of bundle spacers on energized 500 kV line which reduced work duration from 6 months to 22 days with significant cost saving. • Developed and proof-tested adjustable protective devices (Portable Protective Air Gap) to enhance worker safety in live work on lines up to 500 kV. (US 6,957,117 B20 with PSE&G). • Designed and executed tests on a commercially available fully-fueled and operating helicopter for live work on lines energized up to 800 kV. • Designed and constructed full-scale underground distribution cable infrastructure for manhole event studies. • Designed and executed validation tests on manhole covers with controlled pressure relief system that restrains the cover and reduces collateral damage and injury. (EPRI Success Story flyer 1018073, August 2008). • Executed long-term high-temperature (200oC) tests on ACSS conductors. • Formulated guidelines for work on high-temperature (200oC) conductors • Developed procedures for minimizing errors (and near-misses) in control room and switchyard power switching operations: • Published a pocket book on identifying, and dealing with error-likely situations in the control room and in switchyards. • Designed and executed a $1M project to quantify radiated and convected thermal energy from high-current (up to 40 kA) arcflash events in transmission line and substation open-air environments.
