Daily Duties at Fort Belvoir Community Hospital:

Served as senior nurse on a surgical ward, providing direct patient care and assisting in directing the delivery of patient care provided by staff, contract professionals, and paraprofessionals. Supported the vision of the Joint Capitol Area Medical Command to provide world class patient care by ensuring continuity of safe patient distribution and adherence to policies, procedures, and professional standards. Identified threats to patient safety, and worked to improve the recognition and responses of professionals and paraprofessionals to changes in patient conditions. Ensured that the clinical and educational needs of patients and families were anticipated and accommodated in a timely manner by professionals and paraprofessionals. Ensured the use of evidenced-based practices to promote patient safety and quality outcomes. Conducted in-services according to new policies, procedures, and educational needs of the staff. Served as a point of contact for promoting staff competence and compliance in TeamSTEPPS, falls risk prevention, and Workload Management System for Nursing-internet (WMSNi). Served as charge nurse and nurse preceptor. In the role of charge nurse, I ensured the appropriateness of post-operative patient care assignments, and implementation of patient care practices according to Infection Control Standards, Joint Commission Standards, and National Patient Safety Goals. In the role of preceptor, I facilitated the orientation and assimilation of novice staff into the clinical setting. For each preceptee under my leadership, I provided consistent interaction, constant feedback, and a supportive environment which optimized their learning.
