Daily Duties at Sentara Healthcare:
This Palliative Care program started in 2003 that was structured with physician oversight and one dedicated RN supported by a team of volunteer hospital staff: Chaplain, Physical Therapists and Nutritionists successfully and consistently saved the hospital $1,000,000.00/year per budget reports. • Identified patients approaching end-of-life while assisting patient to express goals and wishes • Assisted patient/family to: recognize end-of-life signs and symptoms, recognize/honor patient wishes, reconcile family relationships, say “good-bye” • Developed curricula to provide staff, patient/family, and community palliative care and symptom management education • Facilitated a monthly meeting of the Long-Term Care Liaison Group • Served on the Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center (SWRMC) Cancer Committee
