My initial responsibility at Boehringer-Ingelheim involved driving research programs within the atherosclerosis therapeutic area. As part of this, I was responsible for expanding and modifying in vivo models used to study candidate drugs, to evaluate imaging modalities to assist in model development and to identify new targets through either in house efforts or through external collaborations. As part of departmental restructuring, I became responsible for the atherosclerosis portfolio and program prioritization, managing the research team (12 individuals with a team salary budget of ~$1,100,000) and assisting with the integration of the US based department with a companion department located in Biberach, Germany. Much of my effort focused on maintaining a productive team despite reduced headcount. I identified several CRO companies that we contracted with to insure consistent delivery of data during the restructuring period (~$300,000 in outsourced services). Through the reorganization, we identified the strengths of the different sites and utilized this to develop research strategies based on the skills of the different sites. For example, at the US site, we expanded our in vivo model systems and then once these were fully developed, transferred the protocols to Germany. The German site already had several imaging modalities in place so these were modified to examine plaque formation in our model systems. Through this collaboration, we improved our capabilities to evaluate lead compounds in our research program.
