Daily Duties at Norton Sound Health Corporation:

I was the Director of Human Resources with responsibility for Employee Relations, Benefits, Recruiting, On boarding and Education, HRIS selection and implementation, Corporate Housing, and I was a Corporate Officer. I was hired to fill the role of HR Director. As I worked the Corporate Housing and HRIS responsibilities were added to me. 1. I held team meetings every day to touch base with my staff of 12 and give a very short HR training moment at the start of the day. We focused on general HR functions, employee engagement, customer service, and immediate projects. 2. It was my responsibility to fill in for my managers when one would be absent for whatever reason. I most often filled the role of Employee Relations as this manager traveled frequently. In this role I completed employee investigations, as well as working through the employee discipline process. I also had the responsibility of monitoring adverse actions and the termination process. I also had the privilege of recognizing employees for their effort on a regular basis. 2. I regularly worked with managers to help them with management challenges they faced in their departments. I tried to help them find ways to energize and engage their employees so that their departments would run smoother and even more productive. 3. I worked with our Benefits Manager on our WebTPA to help resolve insurance issues and make sure that we were being corporately responsible while taking care of the medical needs of our employees. I also worked with the management of the WebTPA to develop the new health plan for the upcoming open enrollment. We also worked regularly on wellness policies and implementation. 4. I worked with our Recruiting and Staffing manager to ensure that we were following Alaska Native Preference in hiring as this was required by law. I also worked with her as we tracked and monitored applications, hiring, and employee retention matters. Our recruiting department also had the responsibility to bring in traveling nurses and Locum doctors. This was very challenging as we had a constant rotation of professional employees working through our system. We also had to find housing for these short-term employees. 5. The area of Corporate Housing was added to my responsibilities during my time at Norton Sound. This Included hiring a New Manager and carrying out a remodel of the existing apartment building. I was responsible to develop the budget, order, and make sure that the new manager was completing the remodel on time and on budget. This department also had the responsibility for housing all short-term employees of the hospital. 6. As a Corporate Officer and Director of HR I reported to the hospital board (30 people from 15 village locations) concerning all areas of HR. I also had to prepare the written report for their folders. 7. I worked directly with our lawyers on an as needed basis. 8. I worked on projects and reports for the CEO at her direction. 9. I was responsible for the weekly on – boarding of new employees. I worked with the Education/Training manager to make sure that each weeks training was sufficient to meet the needs of the employees and organization. I helped shorten the training from a day and a half down to one day. 10. My department was responsible for all fingerprinting, background checks, and I-9 paperwork. I worked with the Employee Relations manager to make sure that everything was done in a timely manner. 11. My department was responsible to coordinate with payroll to ensure that all employee actions were entered in a timely and accurate manner. 12. I worked with the other Corporate Officers on a daily basis to be sure that they are HR needs were being met for their divisions. I worked quite often with the VP of Hospital Services to help him with employee and manager issues. I also worked quite often with the Compliance Officer as we worked through employee relations and discipline issues.

What they like about Norton Sound Health Corporation:

You give high priority to hiring firms with prestige. Market reputation and prestige of a firm may be determined through on-line research, and conversations with individuals working in your target industry. Note that firms "in the public eye" receive a great deal more critical publicity and attention than those operating with more anonymity. So as you assess your employment opportunities, be sure to seek out the positive aspects of the firm's reputation in addition to noting negative publicity the company may have received.
