Daily Duties at Ibm:
As an employee for IBM I started as a computer operator working mainframes. My duties included communicating with the MVS operating system using the console, setting up and printing output on various forms, mounting tapes on various tape drives, IPLing the mainframe, I was also the chief operator for the IBM internal company network concentrator located at our location. Other duties included assisting network technicians working line problems. Doing this I supported the company corporate network. I also assisted in conducting line tests with phone company technicians, swapping modems both physically and using a patch panel. Loading and doing first level trouble shooting on 3705 communication boxes, and operated the network concentrator housed at this site. I was then assigned to establish and work the helpdesk for a classified project. After establishing the Help Desk, I was then transferred into the MVS system programming department where I installed, tested, and placed into production products. I built and delivered complete MVS operating systems to a classified customer location using the IPO, CBPDO, and SMP/E receive, apply, accept process including usermods, and also installed maintenance. I assisted my counterparts at the customer site with the installation, testing and placing into production the systems that were delivered. My responsibilities included Direct Access Storage Device (DASD) availability using DF/HSM for space maintenance and backup/recovery. I investigated system problems, found and installed fixes from the IBM PTF database. I used RACF to protect and allow access to datasets. I worked with catalogs and completely rebuilt a user catalog after it was corrupted with minimal loss. I did system gens to add new devices to be used on the system. I was briefly a system administrator for our new AIX system.
What they like about Ibm:
You give high priority to hiring firms with prestige. Market reputation and prestige of a firm may be determined through on-line research, and conversations with individuals working in your target industry. Note that firms "in the public eye" receive a great deal more critical publicity and attention than those operating with more anonymity. So as you assess your employment opportunities, be sure to seek out the positive aspects of the firm's reputation in addition to noting negative publicity the company may have received.
