Daily Duties at Algiers Community Health Clinic:

At this clinic I completed an ambulatory care rotation. My preceptor on this rotation was a certified diabetes educator, therefore the disease states of emphasis were diabetes, hypertension, and dyslipidemia. 1.While on this rotation I gained experience as a diabetes educator. When patients came to the clinic I sat down with them to discuss their medications, diet, and home blood glucose log. For those with uncontrolled blood sugar I would teach them about properly taking their medications in regards to time and administration. In addition, I taught these patients about how there food choices affected their blood sugars and overall health. Furthermore, If I felt any medication adjustments where warranted I presented my case to the patient's primary care physician which was located within the clinic. 2. While on this rotation I co-authored my first publication "Prasugrel verses Clopidogrel: Antiplatelet Effects." This research project was about the drug prasugrel whose trade name is now Effient. The authors of the main study used in our research argued that Effient had a better antiplatelet effect after a heart attack largely due to the fact that it did not have to undergo conversion from a prodrug to an active metablolite in order to be effective. My preceptor on this rotation felt our research was thorough enough for publication in a professional journal. She submitted our work and it was excepted by the Louisiana Society of Health-System Pharmacist Newsletter.
