Daily Duties at Thomson Reuters Corporation:

I am responsible for all aspects of the corporation’s compliance with international export and economic sanctions laws. Developing and implementing policies and tactical procedures, I build and lead cross functional teams as required by our product development, sales and distribution strategy. My team has developed export compliance procedures for: • Protective, sensitive or classified equipment, optics and communications gear of a military grade of manufacture used by Reuters’ journalists in danger zones: • The wide ranging international movement of software and hardware. Some of this software includes or calls upon controlled ‘cryptographic’ capabilities that are heavily controlled. These technologies and the means by which they are delivered can be extremely technically complex such as those delivered via as ‘cloud based’ services. The development of systematic export control over software development is very much an evolving area of regulatory compliance. • We have built an electronic, workflow embedded system via our Accellus platform to routinely and automatically screen all prospective and existing customers and other business counter-parties (vendors, partners). These are checked against the most current key internationally published governmental lists of ‘denied parties’ with whom it may not be legal for Thomson Reuters to conduct business. • We have identified several million dollars in funds that, when properly licensed, may be recoverable from such counter-parties after government approval and licensing according to the correct process is complete. • We are redesigning and modernizing all aspects related to export compliance in software development, licensing and delivery. This will markedly increase our ability to anticipate and seamlessly comply with regulatory changes governing the restriction and licensing of exports in a rapidly changing development environment for our new technologies. I have global responsibility for the development management of these compliance functions from the perspective of legal direction and assistance to the businesses and the design and implementation and operation of a coherent control regime across the corporation. I report into the General Counsel's office in this capacity.
