Daily Duties at America Online Inc.:

One thing I loved about working at AOL was the flexibility. These people did not micromanage. They thrived on their employees taking initiative and running with an idea or concept. AOL was a very fluid place. On any given day, you worked with individuals from every department, across teams across the country. There were also a ton of meetings to attend daily. So many meetings, you barely had time to actually do the work, we just met to talk about plans and implementation. I started out working within the Travel channel. I would help with marketing, trying to get clients to place ads online for advertising. I also helped create ways to get users to the site and click on all the items on the travel page. I met with the designers and developers and together we came up with ways to make the travel site interesting so people would click on items on the page. I also helped come up with ideas on what the page should look like, who is our target market and trying to bring in new clients to advertise promotions on the travel page. I then moved over to the Financial channel to produce informational and exciting financial news and information to the financial pages of aol and their subsiduaries. I did everything hands on to take an idea and bring it to the web page. I helped write the software, develop the programming and did every step to get it from concept to the actual thing you saw on the page for the user to click on. I loved being a part of the entire process. It also helped my computer software knowledge grow immensely. AOL created everything the AOL way. That is to say, we customized everything to AOL. A lot of the software we designed and developed could only be used for AOL. It wasn't a standard formula that could be applied to the outside universally. For the travel channel and the financial channel, I was able to build a broad effective campaign, execute the campaign in conjunction with a team of professionals including vendors, consultants and others. I regularly report on progress of the campaign and have experience in coordinating media relations.
