Daily Duties at Goldendale Aluminum Company:

Responsible for daily operations of the on-site lab including lab staff supervision. Trained and directed lab personnel, previewed analytical test results, calibrated/maintained a variety of laboratory instruments. Performed chemical inventories, R&D activities designed towards process improvement, and prepared written documentation, manuals, procedures and technical reports. Worked with raw materials suppliers. Interviewed prospective lab personnel, wrote performance evaluations, and aided in the budgetary process. Performed analyses using atomic adsorption, HPLC, GC/MS, laser diffraction particle sizer, mercury porosimeter and viscometers. Duties included performing EPA Method 5 isokenetic air sampling of scrubber towers/roof fan rooms required by our Title V- Air Permit with results reported monthly to Washington DEQ. The plant’s NPDES permit required daily analysis of the sewage effluent, industrial water streams, surface water testing with results reported monthly to the Washington State DOE. One of our major waste streams was spent potliner, governed under RCRA. We analyzed the potliner for chemical composition to profile the waste stream for shipment to a hazardous waste facility. Other duties included monitoring/testing of ground water around the potliner storage slab and surface impoundment. Duties included performing monitor well static levels, field tests such as temperature and pH, and laboratory analyses for chemical and elemental compounds to check the integrity of the slab and surface impoundment liners. Served as Operator in Training on the company's sewage treatment plant performing daily/weekly tests on sewage effluent samples including temperature, pH, total/residual chlorine, BOD's, bacteriological and microscopic exams of the sludge, oil and grease, and analyses for organic contaminants, such as, benzo-alpha pyrene (BAP). Our plant was regulated by state and federal agencies so we operated under Maximum Achievable Control Technology (MACT).
