This academic research can all go into a "CAREER NOTE" (They were all undergraduate and/or graduate lab rotations and/or summer research projects (each was 2-3 months duration.)) 1) Led a team of three senior mechanical engineering students to design various parts for my sister's electric wheelchair (without voiding the warranty) so she could travel over sand and snow. Stayed within budget and time constraints. 2) Performed molecular biology techniques to study skin cancer (bioinformatics, plasmid construction, restriction enzyme digestions, ligations, DNA purification, electrophoresis, transfection of Ecoli into yeast for post translational processing of truncated human genes in the excision response for skin cancer. Lab skills included primer design, bioinformatics, chloroform and phenol extractions, UV and visible spectrophotometry, pipetting, sequence analysis, transfection of Ecoli into yeast for post-translational processing, etc. 3) Sliced the heads off of really cute baby hamsters to kill them. Removed their femur bones, harvested osteoclast (bone eating cells), used a microtome to carve bone wafers, coated the bone wafers with varying concentrations and thicknesses of radioactive type 1 collagen. Cultured osteoclasts on the coated bone wafers. Measured loss of radioactivity as a proxy for volume loss of bone and ability of collagen to protect against bone loss. Extrapolated to determine protection against osteoclastic absorption. (Created an assay to study the efficacy of various coatings to prevent osteoclasts from invading bone and preventing bone loss.) Measured loss of radio-labeled type 1 collagen, scintillation, live animal dissection, and PTH stimulation. 4) (Whole cell voltage clamping of mutated human sodium channels expressed in frog eggs before and after lidocaine blockade.) Learned to make glass micropipettes for electrodes, set up experiments, learned electrophysiology techniques. 5) (Is this all too long ago to put on a resume?)
