Daily Duties at Naval Engineering Support Unit:
The Naval Engineering Support Unit (NESU) consisted of 7 departments all with the shared goal of providing 24/7 engineering support to 25 CG ships deployed worldwide. My Department contained 16 weapons systems subject matter experts. The total number of employees at NESU equalled 107. I held functional titles of department manager, quality manager, personnel manager, inventory manager & budget manager, training manager, and mentor. In the Departmental Manager role, I attended weekly meetings with upper management to give them an accurate picture of the work being done by my department, as well as its needs and its goals. I routinely reported to my higher-ups to give the CEO an idea about the performance of my department. I then set the goals of the department and ensured that they were being met, so that the larger goals of the organization were met, too. As the quality manager for my department, my role was to ensure all my department's products and services met and exceeded the customers' expectations. Some of my jobs were writing maintenance procedures, auditing maintenance tasks, conducting vendor assessments and resolving customer complaints from the field. Within the scope of this function, I wrote over 12 maintenance procedures, audited over 800 maintenance tasks, and conducted 15 vendor assessments (crane services, shipment companies, emulator device companies, electro-mechanical overhaul companies, etc.). As personnel manager, I managed the hiring, retention and development of employees in my department. I developed a good rapport with all the workers in my department. I assigned each task to the employee best suited for it. I helped to solve any problems being faced by my employees, and boosted their morale to help improve their productivity. I consistently dealt with all employees fairly. All of my 16 person team were meritoriously promoted to their next higher paygrade and three were promoted into management during my tenure. As the Inventory & Budget Manager, I oversaw annual budgets exceeding $6 million dollars in support inventory parts for the ships, travel funds, training funds, and interagency support funds.
What they like about Naval Engineering Support Unit:
The social vibrance of a hiring firm is very important to you. Your ability to make and maintain friendships there is a critical part of your decision. You would likely be dissatisfied with a workplace that is quiet, cold, or otherwise not particularly social. When you investigate a new hiring company, ask recruiters, managers, and potential co-workers about the social life and opportunities there. This is especially important when you are relocating; moving dramatically alters your social sphere both inside and outside the workplace.
